How to Fix Generic PnP Monitor Error

If you are a Windows 10 user, then you may have faced the generic PnP monitor at least once. If that is the case, then you must be looking for a possible solution or solutions to the problem. Luckily, you are in the right place because I have got you completely covered with my detailed article.

What is Generic PnP Monitor?

Generic PnP Monitor or plug and play monitor, to be more specific is a notification. It appears when the system can’t recognize the device. The system will install a generic monitor driver in such cases to run the component properly.

However, we both know that you are not here to learn what a Generic PNP monitor is. I know you have faced this issue on your computer and you are looking for a possible solution now. I am also aware of the situation as it can get quite annoying, especially when you see it all of a sudden.

Having that said, you shouldn’t give up because there are possible solutions that you can try to fix the generic PNP monitor issue. As I mentioned earlier, I had faced this issue before, and to be very honest. I was very much annoyed when I saw a yellow question mark appeared on my screen.

At the same time, I was worried because I bought the new odyssey monitor and it wasn’t working. However, my inner geeky part told me not to give up so soon because it wasn’t over at all.

Therefore, instead of losing hope and giving up all of my efforts, I began to look for a possible solution. After spending a few hours on the internet and wasting one full evening, I figured out some of the issue’s leading causes.

Don’t worry; I will tell you exactly how to solve the generic PNP monitor problem. Not only this, but I will also tell you some of the main reasons that cause this issue. Therefore, if you want to get rid of your problem, then I suggest you keep reading.

What Causes Generic PNP Monitor

Before we go to the problem solution section, I want you to understand the problem altogether. Once you know the root cause of the issue, then solving it may not be that difficult. Therefore, I highly recommend reading this part entirely and do not skip anything at all.

As I already told you that I had to do in-depth research on this issue. During my research, I noticed a few main factors that mainly causes the generic PNP monitor issue. These factors are as follow:

1. Upgrading from Windows 7, 8 to Windows 10 :

One of the main problems users commonly faced in the previous windows versions was the drivers. If you have used win95 or even windows XP, you might be aware of this issue.

Back in the days when you installed the operating system on your computer, you had to install the required software drivers for each component.

This was quite an annoying problem because the internet wasn’t common that much at that time. Even in the latest operating systems such as Windows 7 or 8, you need to install all the necessary drivers.

These drivers are the software that controls all the components connected to your system such as GPU, monitor, sound card, etc. If you have recently upgraded your operating system, then chances are you may have a missing monitor driver. As a result, you will be facing the generic PNP monitor issue.

2. Using a Secondary Monitor :

Another leading cause of the generic PNP monitor can be the secondary monitor that you are using. Just as I already mentioned, your computer needs to recognize every input and output device connected to it.

Dual Monitor
Dual Monitor

However, if you are using an additional monitor, then chances are, your system may not recognize it. It might be due to the same drivers issue therefore, you will face that annoying yellow triangle on your screen.

Having that said, fixing this issue isn’t a tough task if you have it on your computer.

3. Due to Hdmi and Vga Cable :

Whenever you want to connect your monitor to your computer system, then there are three main types of cables that you will use. Either you will use a DVI cable, a VGA cable, or the HDMI cable. However, cable quality matters a lot.

Sometimes these cables play a vital role in the performance of your computer. If you are using a cheaper cable, you may face the generic PNP monitor issue. It is because the system may not be able to read the device properly.

After doing an in-depth study on the topic, I was able to find the above-mentioned things responsible for the problem. There might be more factors that may trigger this problem, but I am unaware of them.

Having that said, if you know any other possible reason that may cause the generic PnP monitor, then feel free to let me know. I love to make my articles as helpful as possible. Anyways, after reading the above section, you may have a rough idea of what this error is all about.

I think it is safer to progress further and try to uproot the problem once and for all. Now I will tell you the exact steps to get rid of generic PnP error.

How to Fix Generic Pnp Monitor

Let’s try some possible fixes, and using these, let’s get rid of the problem. Please keep in mind that everyone has different problems therefore, not all solutions may prove helpful to you.

Therefore, I highly recommend trying each one of these until your problem is solved. It would be best if you didn’t give up your efforts too early.

Method 1- Verify the Connection to the Monitor

The first and the most fundamental principle of engineering is to start from the very basics. We will follow the same method and then progress further gradually to more advanced solutions.

The first fix that you can apply to your system is by verifying the connection properly. Sometimes the cables are loose, which may not be able to deliver enough signal. As a result, your computer may not be able to read the component correctly.

Verifying the cables can help you get rid of the problem sometimes without going too technical and in-depth about it.

To verify cables, I love to follow my particular approach. If you want to investigate and verify these cables thoroughly, then you can follow my technique, which is given below.

  • Switch off your PC.
Windows Power Off
Windows Power Off
  • Unplug the power cord and wait for a few seconds. Let everything cool down for a minute or two.

Method 2- Install All the Windows Updates

The next method that you can use to get rid of the generic PNP monitor issue is updating all drivers. Luckily Windows 10 comes with an auto drivers installation feature, which is quite in handy.

However, some drivers may not get frequently updated, such as the generic monitor. Therefore, you can avoid different issues such as sound card bugs, graphics related problems, and even the generic PNP monitor sometimes.

However, it would be best to keep in mind that this method may not work for all of you. It is simply because if the problem isn’t due to buggy driver, updating them won’t help that much. In addition to this, if you already have updated drivers, then you don’t need to apply this method for solving the problem.

If you don’t know how to update drivers then you can follow this method:

  • Open Windows Search Bar, type “Device Manager”. Select and open it up.
windows Device manager
windows Device manager
  • Inside the device, the manager menu find “Monitor” section and open it.

  • Take a look at your Monitor Brand & Model Name. Note down that & google it with Driver. You might see some websites providing drivers with your monitor model, But I always prefer to monitor official manufacturing sites.
  • Now download the exact, updated monitor driver for windows. Unzip it & pace it somewhere.
  • Again as previous click on “Update Driver” & go to “Browse my computer for drivers”.

Method 3- Run an SFC Command

The system file checker has been my swiss army knife since I have started solving different software related problems. Even back in the days when I used to be a noob, I would solve many problems.

The best thing is that around 80% of the time, my problems were gone. Therefore, I highly recommend applying this method to get rid of a generic PNP monitor. I hope most of you might already be aware of the SFC.

If not, then let me explain it a bit. The SFC is a windows system file checker command. Whenever you use this command in the command prompt, it runs a scan on the computer. You need to have a copy of the current operating system in any of your drives.

The drive can be external or internal, but I prefer it to be an internal drive. During the scan, when corrupted system files are found they are replaced with the original ones. This method proves to be quite helpful in a lot of situations.

Running the SFC command is simple you can run SFC command by following the steps below.

  • Open Command Prompt as administrator
Run CMD administrator mode
Run CMD administrator mode
  • Enter command type “sfc/scannow” and press enter.
SCF Scannow
SCF Scannow
  • Your computer may ask you for access grant it by pressing y and enter, depends on your system.
  • Let the process complete.
SCF Complete
SCF Complete

It may solve the problem in most cases. However, if it still exists then you might want to try another method. But make sure not to lose hope because I have got you completely covered.

Method 4- Updating Graphics Drivers

Sometimes the real cause of the problem may be the graphics card and not the monitor itself. Therefore you may also need to check it out to get rid of this issue. You need to double-check the GPU drivers for not only the generic PnP monitor but also other problems related to the display.

Updating the GPU drivers is also the same as updating the monitor drivers. Having that said, I hope you will know how to do it the right how.

Don’t worry I am just kidding here. I won’t leave you alone at any point because I want this article to be a complete guide. Therefore, if you want to update your drivers then please follow the mentioned steps below.

  • Go to your “Device Manager“.
windows Device manager

  • Click on the “Update driver” option and from there select the automatic update.

Once you have done all these steps correctly, then you shouldn’t have any issues at all. However, if the problem still exists like a stubborn rock, then we really need to do something else about it.

Let’s not lose hope and test another method that may actually come in handy.

Method 5- Uninstalling the generic PNP monitor

Ok! this might sound a bit odd but trust me, there is a solid reason behind doing this. The thing is, when your computer already has a generic PNP driver installed, chances are it may not let a new one. Under such conditions due to viruses or other issues.

The driver would not allow any other files to overwrite it. Therefore, the only reason to eliminate the generic PnP monitor is to delete the current drivers. Wait a minute! are you worried about your computer? If yes, then rest assured because I am going to explain everything completely.

As I said, you need to delete the generic PnP monitor from your device manager. Once you delete it, unplug your monitor and then reconnect it back. After a successful reconnection, your computer may detect a new output device and look for a new driver to make it fully functional.

This time it will automatically download the most suitable drivers. Chances are you may be able to get rid of the generic PnP monitor having a super annoying yellow triangle in front. Well, you might also be thinking and talking to yourself that this process is easier said than done.

However, things aren’t that complicated, trust me and almost everyone who can hold a mouse can do it. However, before we jump to the method I want to add one more thing. We are deleting the old generic PnP monitor because sometimes the installed drivers may not be compatible with your device.

This may also be one of those worst cases which display generic PnP monitor issue. Now let’s see how to delete the current driver.

  • Open Device Manager on your computer
  • Right-click on the “Generic PnP Driver”.
  • Navigate your cursor’s way to “Uninstall device”.
Uninstall Generic PnP Driver

  • Click on the uninstall button and wait for a while.
  • Once the uninstallation process complete the system will search for a new one. However, it won’t find it on its own.
  • Right-click on your system name on the top, and tap “Scan for hardware changes”.
Scan for hardware changes

  • Let the computer scan for some recent changes and act according to the situation.

Once the process completes, you may not see the problem again. If yes, then don’t forget to give me a digital high five or a thumb icon to encourage me more.
